While Joran van der Sloot sits in isolation in a maximum security Peruvian prison, one wonders what crossed his mind prior to creating this fiasco. Five years ago, the then 17-year-old was accused of being responsible for the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an American teenager vacationing in Aruba. The case was an immediate media sensation pointing to Van der Sloot’s guilt. Although he was arrested twice, the Aruban police were never able to prosecute the case due to lack of hard evidence. He is now facing another murder charge in Peru, after he confessed to being responsible for the murder of Stephanie Flores, a young Peruvian national.

Since the disappearance of Holloway in 2005, Van der Sloot’s life has been tumultuous at best. He returned to school in the Netherlands, but dropped out shortly afterwards. He attributed leaving school to his inability to return to a normal life after the murder charges. In April 2007, the Dutch National Police launched a new investigation at the home of his parents, digging up their yard with shovels and metal rods searching for additional evidence in the Aruban case. Officers involved in the investigation explained their efforts by stating that the inquiry had never been closed. In November of 2007, he was once again arrested, only to be held for a few weeks and then released.

In 2008, Van der Sloot was back in the media spotlight, appearing on the late night Dutch talk show, Pauw & Witteman. He remained calm throughout his appearance on the show, but towards the end engaged in a heated exchange when crime reporter Peter R. De Vries. De Vries challenged his honesty about statements made regarding the case. According to Fox News, moments after the show ended, the show’s cameras and photos taken by audience members, caught Van der Sloot throwing a glass of wine in De Vries’ face.
