These three women who came from different environments all ended up at the gambling table. Two of them, Poker Alice and Belle Siddons, turned to gambling as a source of income after being widowed. Following the gold rush, the women at times made good livings. All three women were also known to be madams and when times were tough at the gaming table were known to dabble in the other oldest profession in the world—prostitution.

Eleanore Dumont aka Madame Moustache: Expert at Card Dealing

Born in New Orleans in 1829, Eleanore Dumont came out West in 1854, where she began a gambling career that lasted nearly thirty years. She started out in Nevada City, California, where she set up a gambling establishment. She was an expert card dealer who specialized in black jack. In fact, she was one of the first known professional black jack dealers. Madame Moustache was an attractive, well-dressed woman with a French accent and black hair.

As she grew older the upper hair on her lip became more noticeable and soon she was known as Madame Moustache. (behind her back, never to her face) Besides dealing cards, she also worked as a madam. She wandered through the west, and spent the most of the 1860s and 1870s In San Francisco. She eventually wound up in Bodie, California, a rough gold mining center known for its barroom brawls and murders. Her looks began to fade and her luck to run out. In 1879, her body was found in a ditch with a bottle of poison next to her. Though no suicide note was left, it was believed she had taken her own life.
